Arulmigu Masani Amman Temple
Arulmigu Masani Amman Temple is one of Tamil Nadu’s most distinctive Hindu temples, located in Anaimalai near Pollachi and dedicated to Goddess Masani Amman, a regional form of Shakti. The temple is especially renowned for its unusual reclining deity, strong association with justice and grievance redressal in local belief, and its importance as a pilgrimage destination in the Kongu region.
Distinctive Deity
The temple’s most striking feature is the large idol of Masani Amman depicted in a reclining or lying posture, unlike the standing or seated forms commonly seen in South Indian goddess temples. The image measures roughly 15–17 feet in length and has become an iconic symbol of the shrine, drawing devotees from across Tamil Nadu and beyond.
Legend and Origins
According to local tradition, the temple is linked to the story of a woman unjustly punished by an ancient ruler after unknowingly eating a mango from his protected grove. After her death, local people revered her as a divine protector and eventually worshipped her as Masani Amman. Variations of this legend remain central to the temple’s identity and its reputation as a place where justice prevails.
Temple of Justice
Masani Amman is widely known as a “Goddess of Justice” in local belief. Devotees traditionally visit the temple to seek redress for disputes, lost property, or perceived injustices. Rituals associated with petitions and offerings have helped shape the shrine’s reputation as a spiritual court where devotees seek divine intervention in personal matters.
Setting and Pilgrimage Experience
Situated near the foothills of the Anaimalai range and close to the Aliyar River region, the temple combines religious significance with a scenic natural setting. The shrine is administered under Tamil Nadu’s Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments framework and receives large numbers of pilgrims throughout the year, particularly during major Amman festivals. The temple is generally open daily from morning until evening.
